BALLWIN, Mo. — A fifth-grader from the Rockwood School District has taken the top spot in his age group at the National Braille Challenge in Los Angeles.

Last year, Richie Tienter took third place in his group– and this year he accomplished his goal of taking first in the freshman division.

“We were in shock for a moment,” said Richie’s mother Ann. “Then, Richie let out this high-pitched scream and that broke the spell! We were all amazed and just in awe.”

The National Braille Challenge is a fun-filled academic competition open to any visually impaired student who reads braille..
