April is Library Month at Braille Institute
It’s always a great time for a harrowing, suspenseful or spooky book, even if Halloween season is not upon us and BARD is loaded with countless spooky titles that can raise the hairs on the back of your neck. See our Library staff’s choices below for some of the best scary titles.

If It Bleeds by Stephen King – DB99554 – A new collection of four novellas of suspense and horror from the American master. In Mr. Harrigan’s Phone, a teenager’s phone communicates from beyond the grave. The collection also includes The Life of Chuck, Rat, and If It Bleeds, which features King’s recurring character Holly Gibney.

Lovecraft Country by Matt Ruff DB84772 – A novel of linked stories about an African American family in Jim Crow-era America and their encounters with the occult. In the title story, Atticus Turner is lured to New England to find his father, only to discover a bizarre cult with nefarious intentions.

Hunger by Alma Katsu – DB93829 – Members of the Donner Party wagon train dream of new lives in the West, but the bad luck following them drives some nearly to madness. As members of the party begin to disappear, the survivors believe something hungry is stalking them through the mountains.

Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia – DB99404 – Mexico City, 1950. After receiving a frantic letter from her newly-wed cousin begging for someone to save her from a mysterious doom, socialite Noemí Taboada heads to High Place, a distant house in the Mexican countryside. Both the home and its owners seem to have a dark past.

Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane – DB56046 – The events of four strange days in late summer 1954, when two U.S. marshals arrive on tiny Shutter Island to investigate a female patient’s disappearance from a locked room in the asylum for the criminally insane.

The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson – DB21679 – A frightening classic! During his scientific investigation of the ghosts in an old abandoned house, Dr. Montague invites a young man and two women to participate in his experiments.

The Invited by Jennifer McMahon – DB95053 – Searching for a simpler life, Helen and Nate decided to build their dream home in rural Vermont. When they discover the property has a dark and secret past, Helen becomes obsessed with the story of the women who lived there.

The Passage by Justin Cronin – DB71422 – Six-year-old orphan Amy Harper Bellafonte becomes humanity’s last hope after the North American populace is decimated by a terrifying viral infection – the product of a secret military experiment housed in a remote compound in the Colorado mountains.

The Silent Companions by Laura Purcell – DB94317 – England, 1865. Newly widowed and pregnant Elsie travels with her cousin to his decaying country estate to give birth. At the estate, the servants are resentful, the locals are hostile, and Elsie discovers a strange painted figure in a locked room.

The Troop by Nick Cutter – DB78409 – Scoutmaster Tim Riggs takes five boys on a wilderness adventure on Prince Edward Island for their last hurrah before they age out of scouts. But when an intruder stumbles upon their campsite, the trip becomes a struggle for survival.
